How a Russian killed an air traffic controller in Switzerland: the disaster over Lake Constance
The tragedy over Lake Constance is a story about two disasters. The first took 71 lives, and the second destroyed the life of another person who could not cope with the grief. The first disaster: 71 victims On the night of 1 July 2002, a passenger Tu-154 of Bashkirian Airlines and a cargo Boeing 757 of DHL collided in the sky over southern Germany. On board the Russian plane were 52 children from Bashkortostan traveling to Spain for vacation, as well as the accompanying adults. All 69 people on board the Tu-154 and 2 pilots of the Boeing died. It was only 44 seconds from the moment Nielsen realized the danger until the collision. The second disaster: Vitaly Kaloev's revenge Among the victims were Vitaly Kaloev's wife and two children, a Russian architect from North Ossetia. The loss of his entire family became an unbearable trauma for him. He did not believe in coincidence and sought out culprits. Two years later, in February 2004, Kaloev came to Switzerland and went to Peter Nielsen's house. According to his own words, he wanted to hear an apology or explanation. But the conversation quickly turned into a fight, and Kaloev stabbed Nielsen several times. The dispatcher died on the spot, in front of his wife's eyes. In October 2005, the Zurich court found Vitaly Kaloev guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced him to 8 years in prison. Later, the sentence was shortened, and in 2 ... Read more
